En ce jour solennel de sortie de l’EP 7 de Radiohead In Rainbows en téléchargement “c’est toi qui choisit le prix” (je reviendrai d’ailleurs sur ce système dans un prochain post), je voudrais juste faire un petit aparté sur une des nouvelles chansons de ce nouvel album, Videotape.

Enfin, nouvelle… Ca fait plusieurs mois que le groupe la teste et la joue en live (vue et entendue à Rock en Seine 2006, photos, vidéos), et qu’elle fait l’unanimité.

Voici une vidéo provenant de From The Basement, une espèce de série tv intimiste avec de très gros artistes, dirigé par Nigel Godrich (mentor de Radiohead) : “The most intimate live performances from the finest musicians on the planet.” Ici c’est seulement Thom Yorke qui se charge du boulot au piano.

Dieu Thom Yorke à d’ailleurs déclaré qu’il était extrèmement fier de cette version de Videotape, un peu différente de la version de Radiohead qui se trouve sur le nouvel album. En passant (j’y reviendrai), Radiohead, après avoir passé plus d’un an en studio à travailler, peaufiner, retravailler, repeaufiner, etc… l’album, a déclaré être très fier de cet album (c’est rare de leur part de dire ça). Ca fait un bout de temps que je le dis et répète, mais cet album sera monstrueux, peut-être pas aussi surpuissant au niveau de son impact sur le monde du rock comme OK Computer, mais d’une intensité sans pareil. D’une intimité inégalée. Bref, un album qui marquera encore l’histoire, mais pas de la même façon que les autres. Encore une démonstration de force du meilleur groupe du monde sur leur thème favori : l’experimentation (et à chaque fois, c’est un coup de maître)

Enfin bon, je reviens à Videotape. Voici donc la vidéo…

Une des meilleurs réalisation du groupe de ma vie. Encore un tremblement de terre intérieur. La voix de Thom atteint la perfection. Sur une base ultra simpliste, il(s) arrive(nt) à créer en même temps une mélancolie si profonde et une puissance si extrême que mon cerveau ne sait plus quoi faire à la fin de chaque écoute. Elle me touche physiquement. Et au plus profond de moi. C’est à chaque fois une expérience personnelle difficile et intense. Seul Radiohead arrive à créer un tel feeling chez moi. J’arrive pas à comprendre comment ils font, et surtout, comment ils arrivent à le faire et refaire. Mais je m’en fous.

Aux sceptiques qui trouvent que ce groupe donne envie de se tirer une balle (je critique pas cette vision), voici une quote trouvée et à laquelle j’ai rien à redire :

Au delà du coté musical parfait de Videotape, il y a les paroles, pas toujours au niveau de la mélodie et de la construction des chansons à mon goût chez ce groupe (faut avouer qu’ils mettent la barre un peu haut). Mais là…

A chacun d’avoir sa vision personelle de la signification de la chanson. Personnellement, j’ai la mienne, ce qui donne une force supplémentaire à cette fuckin’ song. Elle rassemble donc tout. Elle rythme mes journées en ce moment. Et pour encore très, très, très longtemps.

Sur la chanson en elle-même :

• How can radiohead keep doing it?

Sur la signification des paroles :

• It sounds like a suicide note.
• I don’t think it’s a suicide note. I think it’s written from the perspective of someone who is away from the person he loves and the thought that he might die before he gets the chance to tell her pops into his head and so he decides to write this. The song itself could be the ‘videotape moment’ he is referring to. It is obviously written to someone he loves very much but that he is not able to express these feelings to. This is the person who is at the centre of his life and his thoughts at this moment. Such a beautiful and powerful song. I loved the Amsterdam 2 perfomance. It made me cry.
• I think this song could be about him looking back at his life and thinking of all the things he has done, and the videotape is like an analogy. The line the sounds like it could be suicidal, I don’t think so, I think it may be like his past relationship has failed and now he doesn’t even get to say goodbye face to face.
• The only version I’ve heard so far is “From The Basement.”
  It definitely ranks in the Top 10 Radiohead songs for me. The piano is beautifully miserable yet the lyrics are sometimes optimistic [rare for Radiohead] about his death:
  “No matter what happens now/ I won’t be afraid/ because I know today has been/ the most perfect day I’ve ever seen.”
  Personally, it’s the way I’ve always imagined my death to be: sudden, full of apologies but happy.
• I get different a different meaning from this song depending on the mood I am in and depending on the version I am listening to. The From the Basement version is very sad.
